What Is a Step-Up Transformer?

A step-up transformer is an electrical device that increases the voltage from its primary winding to its secondary winding while maintaining the same power level (ignoring small losses). It converts low-voltage, high-current input into high-voltage, low-current output — essential for efficient power transmission.

For example, a 220V input can be stepped up to 380V or higher, depending on the application.
In industrial systems, three-phase step-up transformers are commonly used for large power loads, while single-phase step-up transformers are preferred for smaller machines and laboratory equipment.

Working Principle

Step-up transformers operate based on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction.
When alternating current (AC) passes through the primary winding, it creates a changing magnetic field in the iron core. This magnetic field induces an electromotive force (EMF) in the secondary winding. Since the secondary coil has more turns than the primary coil, a higher voltage is generated on the output side.

Construction Details

1. Core
